The Save Science Coalition is a group of organisations including unions and scientific societies with an interest in ensuring that Aotearoa New Zealand has a well-functioning and well-funded science and research system.

Our goals are:

- to oppose cuts to science funding and science staff
across government institutions

- to highlight and catalogue what is being lost through the current cuts

- to defend support for world-leading indigenous research
including mātauranga Māori

- to make the case for a foundation of support for public science
and re-committing to a target of 2% of GDP to be invested
in research and development in Aotearoa New Zealand.

We are concerned about the ongoing government announcements of cuts to public funding across the science sector, including the end of the National Science Challenges, shelving of Te Ara Paerangi Future Pathways programme, removal of Wellington Science City funding, and announcements about mass redundancies of science staff in government organisations, compounded by the existing university funding crisis.

You can read our first full press release here.

Our first report on the extent of the cuts to date, Science Under Threat, is now available here as well as a recording of the panel discussion from its launch.

How can you help?

- share our press releases and report with colleagues and on social media
- encourage organisations you are a part of to sign up to the SSC
- keep an eye out for further updates
